Perth to Margaret River is one of those rides that makes you realise how good Western Australia can be on two wheels.
At around 275–280 km, the direct trip can be done in roughly three hours, but if you're riding a motorcycle, there's little reason to treat it like a race to the destination. The real fun is turning the journey into part of the adventure.
From Perth's southern suburbs to the forests, coastline and wineries of the Margaret River region, you've got plenty of opportunities to slow down, explore and make a weekend of it.
The basic route
For the quickest trip, the route runs south from Perth via the Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway, before continuing through the South West towards Busselton and Margaret River.
But if you're on a motorcycle, we'd recommend thinking about the ride as a series of sections rather than simply following the fastest route.
Perth → Bunbury → Busselton → Dunsborough → Margaret River
Then, once you're in the region, you've got another great option:
Busselton → Caves Road → Margaret River
Caves Road runs for roughly 110 km between the Busselton area and Augusta, passing through some of the South West's characteristic forest and coastal scenery.
1. Getting out of Perth
Let's be honest — the first part isn't the reason you're doing this ride.
Getting south of Perth is about making kilometres efficiently so you can spend more time enjoying the roads once you're into the South West.
Fuel up before leaving and don't rush the first section. A long motorcycle ride is much more enjoyable when you've got plenty of energy left for the interesting roads later in the day.
2. Bunbury: the first proper stop
Bunbury makes an easy place to stop for fuel, food or a coffee.
It's also where the ride starts to feel less like a trip out of Perth and more like a proper South West adventure.
If you've got the whole weekend, there's no reason to blast straight through.
If you've only got one day, however, keep moving — the better motorcycle riding is still ahead.
3. Busselton and Dunsborough
Busselton is one of the obvious stops on the route, particularly if you've never ridden down this way before.
From here you can continue towards Dunsborough and Yallingup before heading south into the Margaret River region.
This is where you can start making the trip more scenic rather than simply following the most direct route.
Tourism Western Australia's recommended Perth–Margaret River itinerary specifically highlights Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup before reaching Margaret River.
4. Caves Road: the road you came for
If there's one section we'd make time for, it's Caves Road.
Instead of taking the quickest route south, divert onto Caves Road and let the ride slow down.
The road winds through the forests and coastal landscape of the Capes region, with plenty of places to stop along the way.
It's not about chasing maximum speed.
It's about flowing through the corners, enjoying the scenery and seeing how much better a motorcycle makes the journey.
Caves Road is around 111 km long and connects the Busselton area with Augusta, making it easy to incorporate into a larger Margaret River ride.
5. Boranup Forest
As you head further south, the landscape changes dramatically.
The Boranup Forest is one of the highlights of the region, with towering karri trees surrounding the road.
It's the sort of place where you should slow down, take the helmet off and actually appreciate where you've ended up.
And that's one of the biggest advantages of doing the trip on a motorcycle.
You're not just travelling from Perth to Margaret River.
You're experiencing the journey.
6. Margaret River
Eventually you'll arrive in Margaret River, where the riding can take a back seat for a while.
The region is famous for its wineries, food, beaches and surf, but there's plenty for motorcyclists too.
Stay overnight, grab some food, explore the local roads and use Margaret River as a base for another day's riding.
If you've got the time, head further south towards Augusta and Cape Leeuwin, or spend another day exploring the roads around the Capes.
Tourism Western Australia's Perth and Margaret River itinerary recommends allowing several days to properly experience the region rather than treating it simply as a destination at the end of a drive.
What bike should you take?
This is where the ride gets interesting.
Lightweight bikes
A 250–300cc motorcycle is perfectly capable of making the trip and can be a lot of fun once you get into the twistier roads.
Middleweight naked bikes
Something like a CB650F or Street Triple is arguably the sweet spot.
You've got enough performance for the open road while retaining the agility and comfort that make the twisty sections enjoyable.
Superbikes
If you're comfortable on a high-performance motorcycle, something like the BMW S1000RR turns the ride into a completely different experience.
Just remember: the best motorcycle for this trip isn't necessarily the fastest one.
It's the one that makes you want to keep riding.
Make it a weekend
If you're able to take two days, don't treat Perth → Margaret River as a simple A-to-B trip.
Day 1
Perth → Bunbury → Busselton → Dunsborough → Caves Road → Margaret River
Day 2
Explore the Margaret River region → Augusta/Cape Leeuwin → head back towards Perth
Or extend the trip further into the South West and make it a proper multi-day adventure.
Western Australia's official tourism road-trip itineraries recommend 4–6 days for a broader Perth/South West loop, so there's plenty of scope to extend the ride beyond Margaret River.
⭐ The Nannup–Bridgetown Road: Don't Miss This One
If you're riding through the South West, don't just point the bike straight towards Margaret River and miss the roads around Nannup and Bridgetown.
The Nannup–Bridgetown section of the Brockman Highway is one of our favourite stretches in the region. The road winds through the forests and rolling countryside of the Blackwood River Valley, linking two of the South West's most picturesque towns. Tourism WA actually features Nannup to Bridgetown as its own leg of the four-day Villages in the Valley road trip.
For a sport bike, this is where the trip gets really interesting.
There are plenty of flowing corners and elevation changes, with the scenery constantly changing between forest and open farmland. A motorcycle route database lists the Nannup–Bridgetown ride at around 61 km, with approximately 257 m of elevation change.
It's not a road to attack at maximum speed. The fun is in finding a rhythm through the corners and letting the road come to you. Watch for wildlife, gravel and other road users, particularly through the forest sections.
Bridgetown and Nannup also make excellent places to stop for fuel, food or a coffee before continuing south towards Margaret River, Pemberton or the wider South West.
If you're planning the Perth → Margaret River ride, we'd seriously consider routing through this part of the Blackwood River Valley rather than simply taking the fastest route.
Drifter tip: If you've got a whole day to play with, the Nannup–Bridgetown section is worth making part of a larger South West loop rather than simply passing through on the way to Margaret River.
Riding tips
Fuel up regularly. Don't assume the next fuel stop will be exactly where you expect it.
Watch the weather. Conditions can change significantly as you head south.
Be particularly careful around dawn and dusk. Wildlife is a genuine hazard on regional roads.
Don't ride tired. A 280 km ride can become a very long day once you add stops, sightseeing and time spent riding the more interesting roads.
And most importantly:
Don't treat public roads like a racetrack.
The goal is to get there, enjoy the ride and come home with the bike — and yourself — in one piece.
